Subject:
We voted for climate action, not new coal and gas
Australian communities sent a clear message at the last federal election - we want real climate action. Candidates with stronger climate policies were rewarded, while many LNP candidates lost their seats because of the Morrison Government’s lack of credible action on climate change. The mining and burning of coal, oil and gas is the number one cause of climate change. There are 69 proposed new coal projects across Australia that threaten lives, livelihoods and ecosystems. I am deeply disappointed that the Labor Government has indicated it supports opening up new coal and gas, with Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek approving four new coal mines in the last six months. Further, right now, the Minister is joining with two coal companies in the Federal court to argue that two massive new coal mines can be approved without proper assessment of the harm they will cause to Australia’s climate and environment. It’s absolutely unfathomable. Voters want national environmental laws to consider the climate harm caused by new coal and gas projects. Recent polling shows that more than two thirds (68%) of voters think Australia should stop approving new coal and gas mines, and more than eight out of ten voters (81%) agree that Australia’s environmental law should have to take climate change impacts into account[1]. The science is unequivocal - stopping catastrophic climate change requires stopping all new coal, oil and gas projects immediately. The International Energy Agency (IEA) said in 2021 that keeping global warming under 1.5’C requires an immediate stop to fossil fuel expansion. How can anyone justify the opening of new coal and gas projects in light of this fact? Pacific leaders have been categorically clear that Australia needs to stop approving new coal and gas mines. The Albanese government cannot hope to co-host the COP 31 climate summit with Pacific Island nations while continuing to approve more climate wrecking coal mines. Every new coal and gas project puts Australians at increased risk of deadly fires and floods and accelerates the loss of our precious wildlife and natural environments such as the Great Barrier Reef. The most urgent and impactful solution to the climate crisis is to leave as much coal, oil and gas in the ground as possible, starting with a commitment to stop expansionary fossil fuel projects. Will you protect our communities and call on Labor to stop approving new coal and gas and properly assess the damaging effects these climate-wrecking projects have on lives, livelihoods and the environment?
